Hiking in NYS: Finger Lakes Region

There are wonderful vistas and landscapes to be seen in and around Canandaigua. A community favorite to check out on your  Upstate New York vacation is the Ontario Pathways. This is a wonderful hiking and biking trail near our Upstate New York bed and breakfast.

The Ontario Pathways is a great day hike

The Ontario Pathways trail is built on abandoned railroad beds. This makes the trails mostly flat with only gentle hills except for a couple of detours around private property. The surface is primarily grass with a bare single track of packed cinders down the center. In heavily wooded areas the grass doesn’t grow so well, leaving just the packed cinders. The Ontario Pathways are also nice for a leisurely mountain bike ride.

The trail is open without detours from Canandaigua east to Stanley and then north to Orleans. Since the trailhead is right in town, this can be a nice walk for after lunch. The trail head is about 10 miles from our bed and breakfast New York.  Just north of Orleans the railroad bed is blocked by private property, see the trail map for detours to return to the trail at Wheat Rd. From Wheat Rd. the trail continues north to Phelps.

This is just one of the many options for outdoor recreation in the Finger Lakes area.
