The 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast Happenings should bring you up to speed on just a few of the improvements made at the Inn this spring. It’s an ongoing effort to keep our quaint B & B current and cozy. And, we do so because we want our guests to have the best possible adventure in the Finger Lakes. Of course, much of your vacation will center on what you do around Canandaigua Lake and the surrounding areas, but much of it will be based on the comfort of your stay and your accommodations.
Our lavishly lush gardens require a great deal of attention. This year already we have trimmed back the forsythia along the front walk. In fourteen years they have not been trimmed back that far. But, after a splendid spring bloom we felt it was time. And, it opened up the walkway bringing in some much needed sunlight. In so doing, we were able to paint our fence, street side and front walk side. A fabulous brick red called Flower Pot that matches our trim was chosen. The forsythia are starting to green up and we are quite happy with the way things are looking.
Also along the front walk, we removed a few boxwood in front of our magnificent windows to repair the window sills. We have now planted a variety of plants, sunflowers, lilies, eucalyptus and a few others I forgot the names of. I am loving the color and the fresh breath that the front walkway now provides.

Just last weekend, Joseph’s Wayside Market in Naples, gave a away two free flats of vegetables to customer. Thank you! I was fortunate enough to pick up two varieties of heirloom tomatoes, brussel sprouts, straight neck yellow squash, eggplant and kale. Now, where to put them. With the help of staff, we cleaned out an area along the fence in our parking lot. we used some old bricks to build a bed and dumped four bags of manure and four bags of organic raised bed soil. Voila! A place for a vegetable garden. My first. I am hopeful, in no time, we will have a bounty of local vegetables we can use in our breakfast preparation. It doesn’t get fresher than that. Now just need to keep an eye on the critters that may be snacking on a healthy diet.
Just yesterday, Ethan and I spent four hours in the lower gardens. We weeded endlessly. Pulled out several plants and cut back others. And, we reset several a stone wall around the boxwood surrounding the magnificent locust tree. We built a small shed to house our outdoor cushions for the steamer chairs and the hammock. Now if I can only remember where I put the hammock. This week, we will work in the upper gardens off the other side of the Barn.
Finally, we are trying something new this year and have a fire pit. The fire pit is available to all our guests, but we do request that you bring your own firewood. We do have some on hand which you are welcome to borrow but will need to be replaced for our next guests. It’s been a little too warm for the fire pit these past few weeks, but I do imagine in the fall, when the colors pop, that it will get more use. Who doesn’t love a good fire? And, we may even have the makings of s’mores available.
