September 12, 2018 by Innkeeper

Who has a Festival of Grapes? Naples, NY does. The Naples Grape Festival is just around the corner and you don’t want to miss this fun time. The Naples Grape Festival runs September 28 & 29 and is located about 20 minutes from the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast. The town of Canandaigua, situated at the north end of the lake, in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The town of Naples is situated at the south end of Canandaigua Lake.

Of course there are stands for several varieties of grapes and you don’t want to miss tasting a grape pies. Monica, Cindi and Jenny all make great grape pies. You may just have to try them all and decide for yourself whose is the best.

There will be plenty of vendors and opportunities to taste wine. And of course, food trucks. Live music. And, a whole lot more.

Always a lot of people and always a lot of fun.

Sunflower Festival

August 29, 2018 by Innkeeper

I had the pleasure attending the Sunflower Festival at Wickham Farms this past weekend. First one and probably not the last. The Sunflower Spectacular Festival is going on this coming weekend, September 1 -3, 2018 and Labor Day weekend, September 6 -9, 2018. So, there is still plenty of time to visit. The Festival is located in Penfield, about a 30-40 minute drive from Canandaigua.

There are two locations. The first stop was more of a kids fun area. But, these two kids had never done a corn maze. So, bravely we entered. Tripped. Walk around a bit trying to figure out what the point was. Then, after five whole minutes we exited. I think it would have been more fun if we were about 45 years younger and it wasn’t so hot and humid. But, we can now check that one off the bucket list.

Lost in a Corn Maze

Next, just a quick drive down the road, turn right and we were at the Sunflower fields. More our thing. We walked around the fields admiring the many different varieties and choosing the perfect sunflowers for our bouquet. You cut the ones you want. So I ended up with a bouquet of very different sunflowers. Bring a vessel and some water so you can keep them fresh on your travels as some of the more delicate ones wilt quickly.

I would highly suggest this or any other Sunflower Festival. I just love sunflowers.

Arts At The Gardens

August 23, 2018 by Innkeeper

This past weekend your Innkeeper attended Arts At The Gardens at Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion. The Gardens are located in Canandaigua, less than ten minutes from the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast. It was the perfect day, weather-wise and otherwise. Cool. Sunny with puffy clouds. Clean fresh air after overnight rain.  Beautiful art. Tempted to buy but just admired. Simply beautiful.

Arts At The Gardens

Arts At The Gardens – Greenhouses

We strolled through the gardens and the greenhouses. Ate a turkey wrap from the tea house. And, listened to live music. Wonderful oldies. I admired the expanse of the grounds and their meticulous upkeep. Imagining what it must have been like to live in this summer home, I could almost feel the excitement of playing tennis on the lawn or swimming in the pool filled with Canandaigua Lake water. Formal dinners. Staff waiting on everyone hand and foot. I was imagining something similar to Downton Abbey probably.

Though the festival has passed this year. Perhaps you may want to start thinking about next year. It’s your Innkeeper’s favorite festival of the year.

New Finger Lakes Distillery

August 12, 2018 by Innkeeper

New Finger Lakes Distillery opening soon. And, your Innkeeper can’t wait! Located in Naples, NY, just a 15 minute drive from the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast, Hollerhorn Distilling is set to open at the end of August, 2018.

New Finger Lakes Distillery

Today we stopped by the distillery and I had the pleasure of meeting Carl, his wife Melissa, Max and Carl’s dad. They have built this distillery from the ground up. It’s not finished yet, but it is impressive. I can only imagine… if this much attention to detail and perfection that goes into erecting a building, their spirits are going to be out of this world. And, they will also be serving light, Austrian food.

Hollerhorn Distilling – Artwork by Melissa

Carl and Melissa were kind enough to let me take some photos. Hesitant at first as they are still under construction. But, I promised I wouldn’t show anything that wasn’t finished. So, my photo may seem like an odd choice. Carl is very much involved in the planning and construction, as is his Dad. And, Carl also knows his spirits. Melissa is an artist and her work is showcased at Hollerhorn Distilling.

It will be a privilege to have such wonderful place south of Canandaigua in Naples. Now, with Inspire Moore Winery, Roots Cafe, Artizanns (local arts and crafts haven), Joseph’s Wayside Market and, of course, the Naples Grape Festival, who needs any more reasons to visit.

Canandaigua Events

July 31, 2018 by Innkeeper

You may be wondering what Canandaigua Events may be coming up in the near future. Well, there are many. Some have passed and some of your innkeeper’s favorites are yet to come. Arts at the Garden. Ring of Fire. Naples Grape Festival. Those are just a few. But we will focus on Art at the Garden for the time being.

Canandaigua Events – Arts at the Garden

This is one of your Innkeeper’s favorite events in Canandaigua and something I attend on a regular basis. Wonderful artists share their talent on the lawn at Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion. There is music, food and of course… beverages. Definitely wine. Probably beer. Perhaps even a spirit or two. Arts at the Gardens takes place August 18th and 19th. It’s the perfect time to tour the Mansion and stroll through the gardens.

1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast Happenings

July 8, 2018 by Innkeeper

The 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast Happenings should bring you up to speed on just a few of the improvements made at the Inn this spring. It’s an ongoing effort to keep our quaint B & B current and cozy. And, we do so because we want our guests to have the best possible adventure in the Finger Lakes. Of course, much of your vacation will center on what you do around Canandaigua Lake and the surrounding areas, but much of it will be based on the comfort of your stay and your accommodations.

Our lavishly lush gardens require a great deal of attention. This year already we have trimmed back the forsythia along the front walk. In fourteen years they have not been trimmed back that far. But, after a splendid spring bloom we felt it was time. And, it opened up the walkway bringing in some much needed sunlight. In so doing, we were able to paint our fence, street side and front walk side. A fabulous brick red called Flower Pot that matches our trim was chosen. The forsythia are starting to green up and we are quite happy with the way things are looking.

Also along the front walk, we removed a few boxwood in front of our magnificent windows to repair the window sills. We have now planted a variety of plants, sunflowers, lilies, eucalyptus and a few others I forgot the names of. I am loving the color and the fresh breath that the front walkway now provides.

Going! Going! Green!

June 27, 2018 by Innkeeper

Going! Going! Green! New York’s Finger Lakes region has plenty of green. And, we’d like to keep it that way. While we don’t have a formal environmental policy, we strive to be environmentally respectful by integrating environmentally-friendly systems and practices whenever and where ever possible.  What follows are a few examples of how the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast, located just seven miles from Canandaigua Lake, has and continues to go green…Going! Going! Green!

Going! Going! Green!

Going! Going! Green!

Most of our indoor and outdoor lights are on timers.  We thank our guests who turn off our lights at night, but it’s not necessary.  They will automatically go off around 1:00 am.  Those that are meant to stay on will stay on.  And, our walkway lights are solar powered.

Almost 75% of our lights use fluorescent or LED bulbs.  The light isn’t as soft as incandescent, but our energy usage is certainly decreasing.  Every time an incandescent bulb is in need of replacement, we replace it with a fluorescent or LED bulb whenever possible to keep that percentage rising.  We’ve recently added LED lights in most of the bathrooms.  Of course due to the mercury content in fluorescent bulbs, we recycle them at Lowes.

Cycling Canadice Lake

June 17, 2018 by Innkeeper

Cycling Canadice Lake is a wonderful way to see one of New York’s Finger Lakes in all it’s glory. A small, watershed lake just west of the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast. The lake is only three miles long and takes about an hour to cycle. In this Innkeeper’s opinion, it’s the perfect ride. Protected on windy days. Cool on warm summer days. Just the right amount of uphill and downhill. On the west side of the lake, the ride takes you through the trees and right along the lake. On the east side, a paved road rarely traveled with stunning views of the lake.
