1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast Happenings

July 8, 2018 by Innkeeper

The 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast Happenings should bring you up to speed on just a few of the improvements made at the Inn this spring. It’s an ongoing effort to keep our quaint B & B current and cozy. And, we do so because we want our guests to have the best possible adventure in the Finger Lakes. Of course, much of your vacation will center on what you do around Canandaigua Lake and the surrounding areas, but much of it will be based on the comfort of your stay and your accommodations.

Our lavishly lush gardens require a great deal of attention. This year already we have trimmed back the forsythia along the front walk. In fourteen years they have not been trimmed back that far. But, after a splendid spring bloom we felt it was time. And, it opened up the walkway bringing in some much needed sunlight. In so doing, we were able to paint our fence, street side and front walk side. A fabulous brick red called Flower Pot that matches our trim was chosen. The forsythia are starting to green up and we are quite happy with the way things are looking.

Also along the front walk, we removed a few boxwood in front of our magnificent windows to repair the window sills. We have now planted a variety of plants, sunflowers, lilies, eucalyptus and a few others I forgot the names of. I am loving the color and the fresh breath that the front walkway now provides.

Going! Going! Green!

June 27, 2018 by Innkeeper

Going! Going! Green! New York’s Finger Lakes region has plenty of green. And, we’d like to keep it that way. While we don’t have a formal environmental policy, we strive to be environmentally respectful by integrating environmentally-friendly systems and practices whenever and where ever possible.  What follows are a few examples of how the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast, located just seven miles from Canandaigua Lake, has and continues to go green…Going! Going! Green!

Going! Going! Green!

Going! Going! Green!

Most of our indoor and outdoor lights are on timers.  We thank our guests who turn off our lights at night, but it’s not necessary.  They will automatically go off around 1:00 am.  Those that are meant to stay on will stay on.  And, our walkway lights are solar powered.

Almost 75% of our lights use fluorescent or LED bulbs.  The light isn’t as soft as incandescent, but our energy usage is certainly decreasing.  Every time an incandescent bulb is in need of replacement, we replace it with a fluorescent or LED bulb whenever possible to keep that percentage rising.  We’ve recently added LED lights in most of the bathrooms.  Of course due to the mercury content in fluorescent bulbs, we recycle them at Lowes.

Cycling Canadice Lake

June 17, 2018 by Innkeeper

Cycling Canadice Lake is a wonderful way to see one of New York’s Finger Lakes in all it’s glory. A small, watershed lake just west of the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast. The lake is only three miles long and takes about an hour to cycle. In this Innkeeper’s opinion, it’s the perfect ride. Protected on windy days. Cool on warm summer days. Just the right amount of uphill and downhill. On the west side of the lake, the ride takes you through the trees and right along the lake. On the east side, a paved road rarely traveled with stunning views of the lake.

Sonnenberg Gardens

May 12, 2018 by Innkeeper

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion located in Canandaigua, New York opened April 28, 2018 for the season.

Old Man Winter was very reluctant to loose his grip this spring. Even the first day of the Spring Wildflower & Orchid Show saw a snow covered ground before sunrise. As such, spring flowers were still sleeping and did not make their appearance for the show. Even some of the earliest spring flowers like bloodroot, which is usually past blooming by the time the Orchid Show starts, had yet to make its appearance. As a result, guests visiting for the show were told that the garden still had its “winter face” on.

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion – Greenhouse

But that face will soon change. Opening Weekend is expected to be quite a show of spring color as the plants try to make up for being weeks behind schedule. This is good news for visitors as the park is going to wake up in a great explosion of color and new growth. Visit Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion soon to see our always unique and never repeated garden show that each and every visit offers!
