Plein Air Canandaigua

June 1, 2019 by Innkeeper

Next week the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast has the pleasure of hosting Mary Ann D., an artist competing in the 8th annual Plein Air Canandaigua. Artists from the around the county will converge in Canandaigua to capture the area’s scenic beauty on canvas. This will be the first time for the 1795 Acorn Inn B & B hosting an artist, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Forty one “juried in” artists have been selected to compete. While out exploring Canandaigua and the surrounding countryside, don’t be surprised to see many artists setting up their easels, ready to create.

White Deer

May 1, 2019 by Innkeeper

I bet May would be the perfect time to view the White Deer. I had the pleasure of visiting the old Army Depot and seeing the Seneca White Deer in the winter. The leaves are down and the deer are more visible than in full foliage. Pretty stark against the brown tree limbs and trunks and the snow. There are rather timid and stay at a distance. I can imagine a cycle tour being fantastic for viewing these shy creatures. But, I would think spring would be a marvelous time as well. Just a pop of green when the foliage is first awakening after a long winter’s slumber.

After more than 70 years of isolation, the former Seneca Army Depot is now open for visitors to see the world’s largest herd of white, white-tailed deer, learn their fascinating story, and see the intriguing remains of the U.S. Army’s former weapons storage facility. Make a 90-minute visit to the fascinating world behind the fence. We also offer special tours for photographers, birders, hikers and bikers.

And I hope to have the pleasure of a photographic tour in my future.

Canandaigua Bed and Breakfast

March 21, 2019 by Innkeeper

It’s been almost 15 years since I moved from California to upstate New York to own and operate a Canandaigua Bed and Breakfast. I wanted to challenge myself and grow by taking on a business I knew very little about, in an area I had never heard of before. Perhaps it was a little crazy mixed with courage. But I was energized by the move and change in profession and am even more energized now. I love the Finger Lakes and am so very content to call it home. Welcoming guests to the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast and playing a part in making their Finger Lakes adventure special is tremendously rewarding.

Canandaigua Bed and Breakfast – Newsletter

This spring, I am embarking on a new adventure… a newsletter. Perhaps not so monumental a task as shaking up my life, but a new adventure nonetheless. The initial list of recipients will be those that have stayed at the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast in the past two years. Hopefully we will add on that list to include new guests that have stayed and perhaps others that haven’t… yet. New guests can sign up for our newsletter by visiting our website. Scroll halfway down any page and a sign up form will pop up. It’s that easy. There may even be a special offer for our inaugural newsletter recipients.

The intent is to share some of our breakfast recipes. I know many of you ask for them and hopefully have tried them at home. To keep you appraised of upcoming festivals and events. Have you seen the line up for CMAC? And, to share specials or news about the Inn. For instance, I am thinking of allowing pets in our Barn Suite. I’ll certainly let you know how that works out. As time goes by, I am confident there will be no lack of content.

I’ve watched Canandaigua and the Finger Lakes grow over the years and have grown with it. I have many more interests and have found ways to experience many of the same things you do… even more because I have the privilege of living here. I hope you will find value in each newsletter’s content and perhaps find another reason to visit this spectacular area in the near future. I’d love to have you stay again.

Sonnenberg Gardens

May 12, 2018 by Innkeeper

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion located in Canandaigua, New York opened April 28, 2018 for the season.

Old Man Winter was very reluctant to loose his grip this spring. Even the first day of the Spring Wildflower & Orchid Show saw a snow covered ground before sunrise. As such, spring flowers were still sleeping and did not make their appearance for the show. Even some of the earliest spring flowers like bloodroot, which is usually past blooming by the time the Orchid Show starts, had yet to make its appearance. As a result, guests visiting for the show were told that the garden still had its “winter face” on.

But that face will soon change. Opening Weekend is expected to be quite a show of spring color as the plants try to make up for being weeks behind schedule. This is good news for visitors as the park is going to wake up in a great explosion of color and new growth. Visit Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion soon to see our always unique and never repeated garden show that each and every visit offers!
